Thrasher, Strutz named to Big 12's first team

The Aggies, led by Nicky Thrasher, beat Texas, 6-0, on Nov. 2. Thrasher led the Big 12 in scoring with 14 goals this fall.

Texas A&M women's soccer players Nicky Thrasher, Kristen Strutz, Michelle Royal, Linsey Johnson, Amanda Burke and Shannon Labhart were named to the All-Big 12 Conference Team as selected by the league's coaches the conference office has announced.

Thrasher and Strutz were named to the first-team, while Johnson and Royal were named to the second-team. In addition, Johnson, Burke and Labhart were selected to the league’s all-newcomer team.

Thrasher, the league leader with 14 goals, was selected as a first-team forward. The El Paso native has accumulated 33 points this season, as she has five assists along with her 14 goals.

Strutz, a sophomore midfielder from Spring, Texas, leads the Aggies with nine assists from her position at central midfield.

Royal earned second-team honors at the midfield position after scoring two goals and adding two assists while being the catalyst of the Aggies’ one-touch pace.

Johnson joins Royal on the second-team after tying the A&M freshman record for goals with 13. The record was originally set in 1993, A&M soccer’s inaugural season, by Jamie Csizmadia.

Additionally, Johnson along with Burke and Labhart were named to the all-newcomer team. Burke was selected

as a midfielder while Labhart was a defensive selection.

AGGIES TAKE REVEILLE INVITATIONAL

The Texas A&M men’s swimming team kept their undefeated streak alive with a 1,175.5-953.5 defeat of Southern Methodist University at the Reveille Invitational at the Student Rec Center Natatorium.

Despite exhibitioning (not scoring) the final two events and suffering another double disqualification on one relay, the Aggies increased their margin of victory over the Mustangs from 173 to 222 on the final day. A&M swimmers also captured all three individual events, giving them sweep for the entire meet.

"This meet was so much better than we thought it would be," said head coach Mel Nash. "The toughness that our kids showed was really head and shoulders above what we were hoping for. Across the board, our people kept coming strong event after event after event."

AGGIES EXCEL IN FALL TENNIS TOURNEY

Texas A&M’s Khaled El Dorry and Hunter Emmott excelled this past weekend during play at the Oregon Duck Invitational at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore.

El Dorry, a sophomore from Cairo, Egypt, was perfect in singles play with a 4-0 mark and also in doubles play with Emmott as the duo posted a 2-0 mark.

Emmott, a freshman from Houston compiled a 3-1 singles mark during the three day event.

The tournament used a round robin format and no individual champion was crowned.

The Aggies will serve as host of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at the A&M Tennis Center in May.

A&M WOMEN WIN FIRST EXHIBITION

Toccara Williams scored 17 points as Texas A&M beat Abyhoj of Denmark, 72-53, in exhibition women’s basketball at Reed Arena.

A&M junior Meg Banahan and senior Celeria Washington each tallied a double-double during the contest. Banahan recorded 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Washington scored 11 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.

"Meg just came in and played an all around game," A&M head coach Peggie Gillom said. "She was one our bright spots. She played

great defense and offense and was one our sparks. She was playing like she was last year before she got hurt."

Banahan suffered a season-ending knee injury in midseason last year.

The Aggies held Abyhoj scoreless for the first nine minutes of the game by sprinting to a 14-0 start.

Banahan paced the Aggies in the opening half with eight points and nine rebounds.

"I’m glad we won the game," Gillom said. "With this being an exhibition game I got to see things that we need to work on and I saw some bright spots. Some of the things we need to work on are rebounding and I didn’t think we got to the free throw line enough. We can’t put the other team on the line 32 times and expect to win."
